These are the different ranks within the Fire and Rescue Service, an outline of key responsibilities and their uniform.

FIREFIGHTER (£24,191 - £32,244)

  • Day-to-day firefighting and fire safety work
  • A trainee firefighter’s basic wage is £23,833, after completion of the training course your salary will increase to £24,286.  After approximately 18 months of development your salary will increase to £31,767 as a fully competent firefighter.

CREW MANAGER (£34,269 - £35,747)

  • In charge of the crew and the fire appliance
  • Can deputise for the Watch Manager
  • Day-to-day firefighting and fire safety work
  • Attends incidents as officer in charge of an appliance
  • Takes command of small-scale incidents
  • Specialist duties, such as training

WATCH MANAGER (£36,521 - £39,974)

  • In charge of the watch at larger fire stations
  • Day-to-day firefighting and fire safety work
  • Junior work in policy areas
  • Specialist duties

STATION MANAGER (£41,578 - £45,861)

  • Responsible for an area of work across a group of fire stations
  • Day-to-day work in a specific policy area
  • Takes charge of large-scale incidents
  • Specialist tasks, such as support at an incident

GROUP MANAGER (£47,887 - £53,086)

  • Responsible for management of a group of fire stations within the district
  • Day-to-day work in a specific policy area
  • Takes charge of major incidents
  • Specialist tasks, such as support at an incident

AREA MANAGER (£56,220 - £61,667)

  • Strategic responsibility for the management of an area of fire and rescue operations or policy
  • Takes charge of a major incident
  • Specialist tasks, such as support at an incident

ASSISTANT CHIEF FIRE OFFICER (£122,277 - £129,093)

  • Strategic responsibility for the Service Support directorate
  • Takes command of major incidents

DEPUTY CHIEF FIRE OFFICER (£139,167 - £146,304)

  • Can deputise for the Chief Fire Officer during their absence
  • Strategic responsibility for the Service Delivery directorate
  • Takes command of major incidents

CHIEF FIRE OFFICER (£163,726 - £172,123)

  • Head of the organisation and the Chief Executive
  • Takes command of major incidents
