Accessibility Statement

Accessibility statement for the full-time firefighter recruitment website

This statement applies to the website at fulltime.joinwyfirefighters.com.

This website is run by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. We want as many people as possible to be able to use it. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using your browser or device settings
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We have also tried to make the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • some links, including icon links and image links, do not show a clear outline when you move to them using a keyboard
  • the exercise videos on the “How to get firefighter fit” page do not have descriptive frame titles, and we have not yet confirmed that they all provide captions
  • a small number of links use wording such as “find out more”, which is not descriptive on its own
  • one link in the notification bar at the top of the page has no text for a screen reader to read out

Enforcement procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the “accessibility regulations”). If you are not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, because of the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • A small number of links use non-descriptive wording such as “find out more”, which does not meet success criterion 2.4.4 (link purpose, in context). Our content team is reviewing and rewriting these links, and we expect this to be complete by 2027.

Disproportionate burden

We are not currently claiming that any of the improvements above would be a disproportionate burden.

Content that is not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

The exercise videos are hosted on a third-party platform (YouTube). We are responsible for how they are embedded and described on our own pages, and the points above cover that.

What we are doing to improve accessibility

We commissioned a full accessibility audit of this website against WCAG 2.2 AA in June 2026 and have already made a number of improvements. These include enabling page zoom, adding a “skip to main content” link, adding a main landmark to every page, labelling the search field, giving the logo and social media links proper names for screen readers, and setting the page language to British English. We are continuing to work through the remaining items listed above.

Preparation of this statement

This statement was prepared on 15th June 2026.

This website was last tested in June 2026. The test was carried out by Red Bullet on behalf of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, using a combination of automated tools and manual testing, including keyboard navigation, screen reader checks and colour contrast measurement, against WCAG 2.2 AA. Every page of the recruitment website was checked.
